Serial inventor Ralph Osterhout discusses his innovative solution for rapidly communicating information across the battlefield using an ad hoc, self-healing mesh network. He also relays his astonishment at the military’s reluctance to trust its soldiers with complex technologies.
—–
Ralph Osterhout, a self-described “serial-inventor” is proof that the challenges of creating solutions for opportunities is the same; whether its coming up with a new category of toys or designing field weapons for the military.
With more than 40 patents and countless products he’s designed, Ralph’s success may provide a path for everyone to twist what they already know to create new ways to entertain. – D.I.C.E. Summit
Known as a serial productizer of technology, Ralph Osterhout regularly ricochets between Advanced military Systems, High-tech Toys, Electronic Intelligence and Consumer Products. His major customers are the Department of Defense, major Toy Companies and perfromance-oriented product companies, worldwide. The common thread: high performance, low cost and meaningful innovation.

Realize there’s ( …
Realize there’s (supposedly) no discrimination between financial classes, education, race, religion, or creed in the military.
Only rank determines how you’re treated. Rank determines how much work & time you put in. A teen born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Olympic-level agility, & University-level education is portrayed as a piece of while an E1 or E2 in the service. It’s a brand new world.

Unfit? Not …
Unfit? Not necessarily. That’s the goal. Im enlisted but among the few that realize it’s just their job to discourage individuality. It’s fun “acting” as expected while on the job, but a lot of ppl- both those who love it & hate it- can’t comprehend it.
It’s mind games.

Yes working bottom …
Yes working bottom up is essential. But on your other point, im actually against much of the non-kinetic operations. Im against much of this current counter insurgency operations we are doing and I think we should be going more kinetic. Actually, not being kittetic from the start is whats gotten us into the mess we are in right now. Our goals and objectives fromthe start of the war were the problem.

Those politicians …
Those politicians don’t hate you because you killed a useless boondoggle.
They hate you because you canceled a large jobs project for their constituents and made it harder for them to launder money. They didn’t care that it was making useless equipment that soldiers rejected.

You’re right, …
You’re right, unfortunately. But, this guy, while not entirely uncommon, is not representative of the current O-3s to O-6s. We’re growing up under Gen. Petraeus, David Kilcullen, we’ve read Gallula, and we understand that thinking troops, working bottom-up, is essential to success.
There will always be a few of the guys who don’t get it and can only think kinetic ops, but they’re no longer the majority power in the Marine Corps, nor Army.

I’m surprised the general would call his men stupid! I thought they were supposed to be smart efficient killing machines. Great stuff though, especially cutting billions of dollars of obsolete garbage.

Thats why the US …
Thats why the US ARMY is going down hill, the mentality descibed of the PEO. “These guys are stupid” “I want them to shoot when I tell them to” Top down centralized control. Next war, if we fight someone that can operate faster, we are going to get our handed to us.
